Week 29 - Another good week, but a sore leg towards the end.
Sunday 22 October 2017. It's just a week before the clocks go back, so I need to make the best of the longer days before then.
I did a few chores before going out for a walk at 3.20 pm. The weather forecast gave a dry day, but it was drizzling when I set off. However, it soon dried up. The horse was being stubborn again, so I left his apple just inside his gate. It was gone on my way home.
As usual I had my camcorder and two carrier bags. One was for collecting litter the other for my camcorder, in case it rained.
Overnight, we eventually got some strong winds from Storm Brian and I knew there would be branches and broken pieces of wood strewn over the paths. I spent more time clearing the broken wood than I did collecting litter. There were leaves everywhere on the ground.
I worked my way around The Glen using my usual routine. First I walked to the waterfall, then back and across the footbridge over the river. It was noticeable the river had gone down a few inches since yesterday.
As I continued along the river path, two women were above me on the upper path. They had a small dog with them. It was a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel pup and it ran straight down the steep bank to greet me. The leaves on the ground gave such a lovely warmth to The Glen today and all the contrasting colours were beautiful. The really good thing is there was practically no litter to spoil it.
By the time I got to the car park my carrier bag was on a third full of litter and there was very little on the ground in the car park. What I had I emptied in the litter bin. I was soon greeted again by the exited King Charles pup. I passed the two women and the pup again on the way to the old reservoir. Along the long flat path I continued to clear sticks and stone. I'll be coming back later for a run and I don't want to trip over anything.
After crossing over the river again, I headed up along the upper path. There was more debris along here than on any of the other two paths. I was stopping every few yards to clear the path. At one point I even picked up a used surgical glove with a stick. What was that doing there?
After dumping my part-full carrier bag in the litter bin, by the car park. I headed along the river path towards home. I was followed by two women out walking and chatting. I walked swiftly to stay in front of them as I wanted to get home soon and I also wanted to take a short video of the leaves on the river path, before reaching the footbridge.
The two women did overtake me as I stopped on the footbridge to finish the video above. I immediately headed home, had a short rest and changed to go for a run. I was just hoping to get away with a short run today.
I headed out again at 5.05 pm with just a cored apple. This time the horse did come straight away. I started jogging 200 m before the entrance to The Glen. Once over the river I set off on my laps and completed five. On the first and the second I also did an extra two laps of the old reservoir. On the third and the fourth, three laps of the reservoir and on the fifth, five extra laps of the reservoir. By the time I finished my first interval, at the waterfall, I had ran 7.2 km.
After stretching for a couple of minutes I jogged back to the exit footbridge, climbed out of The Glen and all the way back into the village. Another 850 m.
Tonight, in The Glen, there were a few dog walkers and three people jogging. They seemed to be jogging separately, but all appeared to be together. A man, a teenage boy and a younger girl. As for the weather, it was cool, but it was dry.
Total today, 8.05 km (or 5 miles) running and 3 miles walking. A good start to a new week. I was feeling a bit tired at the end, but that was probably due to having two tough weeks and I also felt I was travelling quicker tonight, especially on the last lap - it was probably my fastest lap to date.
Monday 23 October 2017. It was dry today, but I decided to have a break from running today. I cooked a beef curry and later went for a walk. I didn't set off until almost 6 pm and by then it was starting to get dark.
On the way there the horse tried to hide on me, but eventually he came for his apple. In The Glen, as I crossed over the entrance footbridge, a young woman came running past me. She was going at a good pace. I also knew I had to move quickly to get around all the paths before it got too dark. I went to the waterfall first. There was a beautiful red sky and a crescent moon.
As I walked back into The Glen the jogger was already back. I would see her many times over the next 40 minutes. My old school friend was walking his dog and we said hello a few times. One video I was taking of The Glen in the dark from the long flat path, he suddenly appeared into view on the river path and the woman jogging appeared above him on the upper path.
I walked all the paths, at least once tonight, but there was very little litter to collect. At times the sky was wonderful and, apart from the one jogger and one dog-walker, it was so peaceful. Just me the birds singing and the sound of the river flowing by.
As I walked along the upper path, back towards the car park, some little birds were singing the night in. By now it was darker and maybe too dark for my eyes to run in. I took a video of the trees, the river and the footbridge, as I also wanted to record the birds. To my surprise, as I filmed the footbridge over the river, the woman jogging appeared again. Thank God, I wasn't running tonight as this young lady would be overtaking me all the time, but it's so great to see her out enjoying this beautiful place.
After getting to the car park again, I headed home along the river path. It was now almost dark, but I could still make out my way. I started singing an Irish folk song. I was hoping no one could hear me, but I soon realised there were still two people in here. It didn't stop me singing as I was just happy and didn't want to stop.
After crossing over the river again, I headed towards the exit bridge. I said my last hello to the young woman jogging and my old school friend walking his dog. I also said hello to a young girl, wearing a duffel coat and just entering The Glen. My friend said it was too dark to be here now. It made me think, as I could still see the crescent moon through the trees. So I decided to turn around and walk back towards the waterfall. I thought it was another good video opportunity and I know the moon is a bit of a lazy thing and doesn't move across the sky very quickly.
The great thing about may camcorder is, it can make night look a lot brighter than it appears in reality. You'll see this in the video above.
As I walked back out of The Glen, I decided not to head home, but to walk along the narrow road into the middle of the village. It's about half a mile, but it's quiet and it's dark. At the other end of it is an old railway viaduct, not used since Beeching Axe of the 1960s.
I continued up the Main Street and got a few comments of people for only wearing a T-shirt and pair of shorts. They may have been cold, but I was warm and happily enjoying my walk.
The moon was still being lazy and was sitting in the sky next to the monument in the middle of the village. I tried for a while to get an angle with it on top of the monument, but I couldn't. It was busy and cars were passing by. I was worried, as twenty years ago, during the Troubles in Northern Ireland, you could get in trouble walking about here with a camera at night.
I went to the shop, then decided to drop into my youngest brother's pub for some of the black stuff. I walked home, served up my parent's meals and had some myself. One of my cousins was here and we had a few laughs.
Although, I did not run tonight, I did have an enjoyable walk and covered about 4 miles.
Tuesday 24 October 2017. I got a call at 2.30 pm asking where I was for a 2 pm appointment in Armagh - I thought the appointment was on Thursday. It was a bit of a shock, but I've rescheduled it for tomorrow.
It rained most of the day. I had a shower, stretched and set out at 4.25 pm. I had a very large apple for the horse today and he came straight away for it. He even took his time eating it.
I started jogging 200 m before entering The Glen. I jogged down and over the footbridge and set off on my laps. I had pasta last night and I was feeling good. The light rain was a bonus, as I knew it would keep me cool. I was hoping to get a good run in tonight, but as usual I didn't really have a target.
As the laps went by, I was feeling I was flowing easily and enjoying myself. I knew I was going faster than usual and wondered how long I could keep it going. I was really enjoying the light rain and the peacefulness. The rain was keeping people away. By my tenth lap all I had seen was one woman jogging, and two men walking their dogs.
On my 13th lap I also did two extra laps of the old reservoir, and did so again on my 14th and 15th lap. I passed a couple I knew a few times during these laps, it gave me a boost and, without thinking, I was going even faster. I also passed my old school friend with his dog, but I only seen him once. The rain probably shortened his walk tonight. However, with a day off, from running, yesterday, and with the cooling effect of the rain, I was having my longest run to date.
My 16th lap was new territory for me and I was starting to feel tired. I briefly stopped at the car park to pick up a few pieces of litter that had been annoying me all night. I only stopped for a few seconds, but it was an effort to get started again. By the time I had climbed the steep hill to the old reservoir and rounded it, I was feeling good again. I did an extra ten laps of the reservoir and was loving it.
By now the light had almost gone and, although I wanted too, I decided to just run to the waterfall and stop there.
As I did my rounds of the reservoir, on my 16th lap of The Glen, two young excited lads on bikes went past. They didn't see me due to the dark and because I was at the opposite side of the reservoir at the time. Soon afterwards, when I stopped at he the waterfall, I let a roar of enjoyment out before stretching at the bench. What I didn't know is they were approaching on their bikes. I must have really scared them as they stopped, turned around and immediately scarpered in the opposite direction. They probably think they saw a ghost, and will have a story to tell their friends.
After stretching a short rest and for just over a minute, I started jogging again, but this time very slowly. I continued all the way back to the village and to within 100 m of home. By now it was raining heavier, but I stayed out stretching and cooling down for about five minutes. Inside I changed, walked to the local shop and back (with an umbrella). On the way back I stopped at my aunt's to collect some soup for my mother.
Tonight, was my longest and most enjoyable run to date. I ran intervals of 18.3 km (or almost 11.4 miles) and 0.9 km. A total of 19.2 km (or just under 12 miles). I also walked a mile.
Wednesday 25 October 2017. I had to go to Armagh City at lunchtime. I didn't do much walking as my legs were very stiff from the previous day. On the bus, on the way there I took a few videos.
Thursday 27 October 2017. The weather was beautiful today. I went to Armagh City for the second day in a row. However, unlike yesterday, I did walk about a lot. On the bus there, I took a few videos again. I always love the old railway viaduct and mill, by the River Callan at Tassagh.
On arriving home, I cooked sweet and sour chicken for my mother and father. I then changed, stretched and went out for my run. On my walk towards The Glen, the horse came quickly for his apple. The weather was beautiful and that's probably why he wasn't hiding in his little house.
Again I started jogging early and down into The Glen. I was surprised how stiff and tired I was on the first lap. I was going really slow, but I just thought, let's see how it goes. Eventually, as the laps passed, I started to feel more comfortable and was going faster. I completed nine laps - it was more than I had intended. On the eight lap I also did two extra laps of the old reservoir. The bad thing, was the back of my right knee was starting to hurt. I still set out on the ninth lap, but on climbing up the hills, I could feel that something was not right. It was as I reached the old reservoir again that I decided not to go for a tenth. Instead, I decided to add a few extra laps of the old reservoir to take my distance up to six miles. As I set out on circulating the reservoir, I felt great and I was flying, but my right knee did talk to me a few times. The thing is, I just got quicker and kept going. The laps flew by. I decided to call a halt after twenty laps, as it was getting dark and I was still worried about my right knee. By the time I finished at the waterfall, it was almost dark. As I stopped, the lower back of my right knee told me there was a problem. I stretched at the bench. I stretched both legs, but I did spend more time on my right leg.
There would be no running up out of The Glen tonight. I was too worried about my knee. So I started walking home. When I got there I stretched a lot, again concentrating on my right knee. I rubbed some Ibuleve into the affected area and changed, but I continued to stretch it every hour.
I changed, had a beer and prepared for my mother's friends arriving. The wine, crisps and cheese were made ready. They had a good night, and as a treat had poppadoms with mango chuckney.
Just before my mother's friend arrived, I did take a video of a beautiful, almost half moon. I'll share it with you below.
Today I ran just over 12 km (or 7.5 miles). I also walked 2.5 miles. Hopefully, tomorrow my right knee will have recovered.
Friday 27 October 2017. It was a beautiful autumn day. I just decided to go for a walk. I was worried I may have injured the back of my right knee. I have been stretching it and there is a bit of a twinge there. I went out for the walk at 5.40 pm. The horse came quickly for his apple.
In The Glen I walked around quickly. There was very little litter to pick up. I only saw one dog walker with her three dogs. I did pick up a Red Bull can from the relief channel - I'd passed it for a few nights now on my runs, but I was glad to get rid of it. There were a few pieces of litter in the car park, but that was it. I walked around The Glen twice. On my last walk along the river path, I took a short video of part of the walk. The colours were beautiful at dusk and all didn't really come out on the video. However, I was here on my own by now and I'll still share it with you.
I didn't walk home. Instead, I walked along the narrow road, back into the middle of the village. I decided to walk to my youngest brother's pub to have a few glassed of the black stuff and watch the rugby. Connacht were playing Munster in the Pro14. However, he had a thing going on with the races at Dundalk. I left to catch the second half at home. Munster were huge favourites, but I have a soft spot for Connacht. I watched the second half and Connacht won 20 - 16 against all odds.
In the pub, my brother asked me if I went for a run today. As I said I just went for a walk, I climbed onto a stool, and as I did, it was the first time my right knee gave me pain today.
I walked about 3.5 miles today. I was hoping to have a run. I continue to stretch my right knee. I will try to run tomorrow, but as soon as my leg hurts, I will stop. Anyway, let's see what happens.
Saturday 28 October 2017. I decided not to go for a run today, as I was still worried about my right leg. I did go for a walk at 5.30 pm. I also prepared the horse's apple, but I forgot to take it with me. He'll have it tomorrow.
I walked swiftly around The Glen as there was no litter to collect. Lots of leaves covered the ground and more were falling from the trees.
I did two laps of The Glen, taking in all the paths. It was almost dusk and there were some beautiful colours.
On the way home I walked to the local shop and back. I just got home in time to watch Ulster play Leinster in the Pro14 Rugby. Leinster won 25 - 10.
Although I didn't get a run in today, I did walk a good stiff 3 miles to finish the week. It takes my total for the week to 24.5 miles running and 18 miles walking.

I worked my way around The Glen using my usual routine. First I walked to the waterfall, then back and across the footbridge over the river. It was noticeable the river had gone down a few inches since yesterday.

Leaves falling in The Glen in autumn.
I did two laps of The Glen, taking in all the paths. It was almost dusk and there were some beautiful colours.
Two photos taking this evening in The Glen.
