Week 4 - I knew something would go wrong

Week 4 of my Long Run Back to fitness started well. On Sunday, 30 April 2017 I walked to the glen then ran 1 x 135 steps down to river. Then 4 laps of including 4 x 270 steps running downhill, 3 x 150 steps on flat and finishing off last lap with 200 steps running. I then ran 100 steps to waterfall, stretched and 100 back. The glen was very empty & peaceful today as it kept threatening to rain, but apart from a few spits it was lovely - perfect running weather. After walking back from the glen I felt good but a little stiff. However, later I managed to hurt my back - don't really want to say how - and at the time, I didn't realise.

Monday, 1 May 2017 I felt a pain in my lower back and side. I though it maybe my kidney or liver, as I do like a few beers and a glasses of wine - maybe too much. I was worried. Anyway, by 7.30 pm I decided let's keep this fitness lark going, so off I went intending to do only one lap of the glen. However, through my sheer stubbornness I ended up doing 3 laps. My legs were stiff and my lower back was annoying me. As usual walk then 135 steps run downhill to glen. On the 3 laps I included 3 x 265 steps downhill, 2 x 150 steps running on flat and finishing with 230 running steps. I then walked to waterfall and back and climbed back out of glen. Afterwards, I didn't know if this had been wise as I my legs felt stiff and my lower back hurt. That night in bed I couldn't get comfortable because of the pain of my lower right back. The next day I knew I had hurt my back the previous Sunday and I had either strained or pulled a muscle.

View beyond the waterfall towards fields.

My thoughts now - is this the end of another effort to get fit again, to loose weight? - I didn't feel happy about things as I had worked so hard and been so careful to build up slowly and only run on soft ground. Surely, I hoped this is not the end.

Well for now it was the end, at least until the pain in my back went. My first thought, buy some Ibuprofen and take it to bring down the swelling around my hurt muscle. In a way the pain-killers worked, but for the rest of the week and all of the next week I only felt pain when trying to sleep. So that probably tells you how much fitness training I was able to do in that time. So my next blog will not be week 5. Hopefully, by week 6, I can get back in some way.

The shame about getting injured, was on my last run the glen was starting to show the first new buds of life for Spring. Small green buds were starting to appear on the trees and it's a time of year I always look forward to see new life in nature. It's the time in the run up to a green relay, I spent over a year putting together and organising for 18 years. It's a time when I used to smile looking forward to the relay and saying to myself, "the country is starting to bloom".
