Week 20 - I was just pleased to get started again.
Now supporting a sprained ankle as the result of fall last Wednesday, I will be happy even to get a walk in, but let's see how it goes.
Sunday 20 August 2017. I got a phone call from my youngest daughter, she's in Berlin and has run a bit short on money. Apart from that it wasn't a very exiting day - I'm resting. During the afternoon I watched Kerry v Mayo in the All-Ireland semi-final. Great game and ended up all square at 2-14 each.
Tuesday 22 August 2017. I decided to go for a walk after lunch. I walked to and around The Glen for well over an hour. I was very careful with my ankle, but managed to walk about 3 miles in total. I collected litter in The Glen as I went, but only where I could reach easily. I also took a few videos of fungi.
I was really pleased that the swelling had gone down on my ankle. It is still very colourful with bruises from the sprain. I have managed to get a walk in sooner than I had hoped and anything else for the rest of the week will be a bonus.
Wednesday 23 August 2017. My oldest daughter arrived from England at 7.30 pm. I had cooked sweet n sour chicken for my parents' and her dinners. I am still eating my curry from the weekend, but I don't mind as I love it.
It's bingo night again and my mother had lots of company tonight - son, daughter and grand-daughter. Tomorrow is my parents' 60th wedding anniversary and we're having a family gathering at Armagh City Hotel.
Thursday 24 August 2017. Up early and a joint effort, with my daughter, cooked a fried breakfast for the both of us and my mother. My father doesn't eat a lot and it was my first fried breakfast in months. My daughter loves an Irish Fry.
At lunchtime my daughter was really pleased when I suggested a walk. The weather wasn't great, but at least it wasn't raining. We walked to The Glen and around it a couple of times. It was slow relaxed walking and we stopped many times to take in the scenery and anything that took our interest. Just as I commented, on not having seen anyone, people started to appear in front of us and behind us. There were even two blokes sitting on the bench next to the waterfall. So we decided to do another lap and then, with an empty bench, we had a rest next to the waterfall. By this time we had walked all three paths twice. The cattle were at the opposite side of the field and all huddled together under the trees - they usually do that when it's going to rain.
The walk home was via the narrow road into the centre of the town and it started to rain, but it was only a drizzle. Overall, we walked about 3.5 miles.
At the start of the walk I gave my daughter the camcorder so she could take a few videos as we walked. However, she just held it in her hand and apart from a couple of fungi, there was nothing to edit or upload. Anyway, here's an earlier video I had from sitting next to the waterfall in The Glen.
The evening family gathering at the Armagh City Hotel was a great success. Around 35 members of our extended family turned up for my parents' Diamond Wedding Anniversary. It's a shame my youngest daughter wasn't there, but her holiday in Europe had been planned and paid for before the family gathering was planned. I took quite a few videos during the evening and edited them into a short video before I went to bed. It takes a long time to upload videos to YouTube and I didn't get to bed until after 5 am.
Friday 25 August 2017. Because of the late night, I didn't get up until lunchtime. My daughter headed back to England in the late afternoon. I was hoping to get a short jog or walk in, but gave it a miss due to the heavy rain and getting dark earlier.
Saturday 26 August 2017. My ankle is still weak, but I'm determined to get out today. I watched a bit of Manchester United v Leicester City. I left it at 0-0 after Man Utd missed a penalty. I do prefer rugby. I had already showered and it was early enough. I stretched a bit and set off walking to The Glen. I jogged down the path and started my laps. I was being really careful, as my ankle is still slightly swollen and multi-coloured. I completed three laps on the upper paths and all the way to the waterfall to finish. I was watching the ground in front of me very carefully as I went. It was a 3.3 km jog and I was tired and sweating at the end.
During my first two laps I could hear the voice of lots of kids coming from the direction of the waterfall, but happily they left before I went there. I saw them on my last lap, below me, as they walked noisily along the river path. There were about 9 of them, but all well-behaved. The area around the waterfall had no litter, so good on them.
I only rested for just over a minute as I still felt good. I then decided to make it up to 4 km, so I jogged towards the exit bridge, but I continued all the way to the sluice bridge and back to jog uphill out of The Glen and to the junction of the roads. I kept going along the pavement almost all the way home and stopped just before the black path - only 100 yards from home. It was another 1.4 km jog and took me up to almost 3 miles jogging for the workout.
As I got home my youngest brother was just leaving, he'd a take-away sweet n sour chicken balls down for my parents. I cooled down for about five minutes and then went inside. My mother had fallen over in the kitchen and my father was standing next to her. He was unable to pick her up. I told her to relax and, after she had stopped crying, I picked her up and sat her on a seat. I heated the plates and started to put their meals out. When I got to the sauce, it was the wrong sauce, it was curry sauce. They said not to worry, but sweet n sour is one of their favourite meal. I phoned my brother and after a few seconds persuaded him to call the Chinese Takeaway. Within 10 minutes I was back with the proper sauce, I made them sit at the same table and both their plates were clean. There was a lot of the food and I had some also. It's tasty, but it's very fattening.
I watched some of the Women's Rugby World Cup Final in Belfast. England v New Zealand. I'm amazed how good the girls are at this rough game. Just before half-time England had taken a big lead. I walked to the local shop and back and by that time New Zealand were leading. New Zealand eventually won comfortably, but I really enjoyed the quality of the game.
Overall. I had my first jog in 10 days. I managed almost 3 miles. My ankle does hurt a bit, but I don't think it's a problem. To have only lost a short time after such a nasty sprained ankle is a bonus. I'll put some Ibuleve gel on it tonight and hopefully I can get back to training.
Thank God, the week has not been a wash-out. I have managed to jog 3 miles and walked 7.5 miles.
