Week 8 - If This Week is anywhere near as good as Last Week, I'll be very pleased.

Sunday 28 May 2107. Today is the second part of the Skip Car Tour. Today was The Tractor's Run and if you like tractors, you'll enjoy the video (2015 version). I did watch some go past my house today.

In the evening I set off again on my walk to the glen. I ran the 135 steps down the narrow path, then set off on my laps. I completed 4 laps that included 4 x 350, 3 x 240 and finished with 400 jogging steps. I also walked to the waterfall and jogged 200 steps back past the footbridge. Whilst doing my laps I could hear a woman shouting a name out continuously and loudly. I even caught a few glimpses of her. Having finished she walked past me and ask if I'd seen a 16 year old boy. It was her son. He had arrived home earlier, he was drunk and she had grounded him. However, he had escaped and she assumed he maybe in the glen as her house bordered onto it. I said I remembered seeing a person who fitted the description about 20 minutes earlier on his own in the car park, but had not seen him since. Unable to be much of a help, I walked home and after cooling down, I walked to the local shop.

Monday 29 May 2017. Today was a bank holiday, it was also the last day of the village music festival. I didn't hear any word on Axl Rose, so can only assume the rumours were wrong and he didn't make an appearance over the weekend. In the evening I was back to my usual routine, but only completed 3 laps as my legs felt a tired. They included 3 x 360. 2 x 250 and finished with 350 jogging. I also walked to the waterfall and jogged 200 steps back - so going well past the entrance bridge. Although, I didn't time myself and because of the 1 less lap, my routine probably took just 40 minutes today. Again, I went late and it was warm and humid.

Tuesday 30 May 2017. A quite day, but in the evening I was off walking to the glen. Jogged down the footpath and then 4 Laps. They included 3 x 360, 3 x 240, 1 x 370 and finished the last lap with 400 steps jogging, Well, I say finished, but I did continue a short part of a 5th lap to get up to 400. After cooling down for a minute. I jogged 125 steps to the waterfall, stretched a bit then jogged 200 back to well past the entrance bridge. After walking home it took me quite a long time to cool down.

Up to now I had been on a long run of successive days in exercising and for the next two days I decided to have a break. It was in my mind that in the past I had overdone things and had ended up injured. My initial plan was just to take one day off, but it ended up being two days. I know fro experience it is always good to have a break, and anyway your body is still continuing to burn calories. The thing is to not get used to having breaks and then giving up altogether. I was starting to really enjoy my routine and I still believed I was loosing weight, even though I have still not weighed myself since I started on this journey.

Friday 2 June 2017. After two day break I got ready late, with a hot shower and some stretching. I walked to the glen and jogged down the path to the bottom. In the back of my mind I though my legs are well rested and let's have a good day. I couldn't believe that on the first lap, which I took really easy on the jogs, I didn't feel great. However, after a second lap I started to feel better. I was pleased to see a girl running on her own and also a young couple jogging together. A couple of hellos and also a family walking with three small dogs. The family could see me coming from a distance and had all three dogs on leads by the time I reached them. As I passed the dogs were fine and didn't take any interest in me. As the laps went on I began to feel more comfortable and for the first time I managed 5 laps. These included 4 x 360, 4 x 240, 1 x 370 and I extended the last lap to 400 steps jogging. Tonight my run was late again and the glen looked beautiful. It had been raining most of the day, the river was in full flow and sounded great, the footpaths were wet, but not slippery as the rain had run down thru the overlying gravel, the trees looked happy and were swaying gently in the slight breeze and the birds were sing their own happy tunes. I had a break with a few stretches whilst enjoying the surroundings. I then jogged 120 to the waterfall, which had lots of water flowing over it, so I had a few stretches enjoying the sound of the falling river. On the way back I jogged 220 steps to well past the entrance bridge and walked slowly back to climb out of the glen. As I walked home I felt a bit weak, but I was very pleased with myself to have completed five laps for the first time. In total I probably covered 4 miles between walking and running. I do have to admit it took me about an hour to fully recover afterwards, but what the hell, this was the best workout I have had to date.

Saturday 3 June 2017. After a great day yesterday I was determined to get back out again. It had been raining but it cleared up later. After a shower and stretching, I set off again, it was just after 8 pm. There were patchy clouds in the sky, some happy looking and some a miserable grey, but the sun was shinning through. Most of the sky was blue and as I walked I started to look at shapes in the clouds. I felt it was a shame I didn't have my camera as my imagination was running wild with the cloud formations above my head. Again I jogged down into the glen. I managed 4 Laps which included 4 x 380, 3 x 250 and finished with a 420 steps jogging. On my last lap a car was pulling into the car park. It was a gold coloured Seat Ateca and in the back I could see two large golden dogs. My mind went back a few weeks ago to the large golden dog with the loud bark who had taken a great interest in my bare legs and made me feel really uneasy. I was glad to get away from the car park before the dogs were allowed out. On the last jog I ran past the first bridge, over the next bridge across the river then uphill for 30 yards and back to the entrance bridge - that's how I got the extra steps in. I stood on the footbridge starting to stretch, but after just a few seconds I could hear this very loud barking from the opposite side of the glen, and thankfully across the river. It was the same dog, it was staring me down and it was making one hell of a noise. I could see the owner was meandering about 50 yards behind both dogs, but one of the dogs had only eyes and bark for me. The barking dog decided to run towards the footbridge over the river and was only 200 yards away - he was still barking and looking in my direction. So what would you do? Well I thought to myself, bollocks to saying hello to the waterfall tonight, I'm legging it out of here, so I did. I started jogging up the footpath out of the glen, I even counted the steps as I went. I was still looking over my shoulder, but I managed 75 steps before I had to start walking. One more glance and there was no sign of the dog. So not much recovery and a jog uphill. I was tired after the walk home. I walked to the shop for a few bottles of Guinness and set down to have one and write this blog. It may not have been as great a week as the previous, but I was pleased I had got out five times and I noticed my belt had come in an extra notch.

As I was sitting writing this the sad news from London Bridge started to come through on the TV. There had been a terrorist attack and in London. It's now 2.25 am and I still have the news on in the background, but it sounds awful and my heart goes out to all those affected and to their families. It's such a shame some people believe they need to inflict pain and injury on others. Why they do it and what drives them to attack innocent people I will never understand. My first reaction, on hearing the news, was to phone my youngest daughter to check if she was OK. I may live in Ireland at present, but my daughter lives in London and if she's going out she usually get's the train to London Bridge and then goes on from there. I know it's a horrible thought to pray, please let my family be OK.

Back to my "Long Run Back to Fitness". In total I probably covered over 16 miles in the week. I'm happy with that, but my prayers go out to those hurt in London tonight and to their families.
